Euromelanoma Skin Cancer Screening in University Hospital Kerry
More than 350 people attended a free skin cancer screening clinic in University Hospital Kerry on Saturday 21st of May 2016 . The event was organised by Dr Johnny Bourke and Dr LesleyAnn Murphy Consultant Dermatologists University Hospital Kerry as part of Euromelanoma and they were assisted by Consultants Dr Michelle Murphy and Dr Mary Bennett (South Infirmary Cork) and Dr Norin Ni Scannlain (Bon Secours Hospital Tralee).
Euro-Melanoma is a pan-European prevention campaign against skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It is also the easiest to cure, if diagnosed and treated early. When allowed to progress, however, skin cancer can result in disfigurement and even death. The screening day serves to highlight awareness of skin cancer amongst the general public and to encourage self checks for new or changing skin lesions.
Dr Johnny Bourke and Dr Lesley Ann Murphy provide a consultant delivered weekly dermatology clinic in University Hospital Kerry which sees and treats skin cancers as well as all inflammatory dermatoses. Phototherapy for psoriasis is also provided at the hospital.
The large turnout at the screening days reflects the publicity that the event was provided by Kerry Radio and the Kerry County Board.

Bantry General Hospital (BGH) and the Department of Dermatology at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH) are pleased to announce the official re-commencement of a phototherapy service at BGH. Phototherapy involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light on a regular basis under medical supervision and is used in the treatment of psoriasis.
The phototherapy outreach service, which is expertly delivered by the physiotherapy department staff at BGH in conjunction with a consultant dermatologist visiting from the SIVUH, provides an effective and convenient treatment for patients with psoriasis. West Cork based patients attend for treatment for a very short period up to three times a week for a total of six to eight weeks to access this treatment. With the service re-opening at BGH, it means that these patients no longer have to travel to Cork numerous times a week for very short periods.
The hospital wishes to acknowledge the Friends of Bantry Hospital for providing the funding to purchase and install the phototherapy unit and for acting as committed advocates to the dermatology services in West Cork. - Dr Michelle Murphy – 2nd April 2015

Free Skin Cancer Check for Adults May 10th 8.30 - 11.30
As part of Euro-Melanoma the Consultant Dermatologists at South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital will provide a free skin cancer check for adults at the Out- Patients' Department, South Infirmary Hospital, Cork on Saturday morning at 8.30 - 11.30, May 10th
Background
Euro-Melanoma is a pan-European prevention campaign against skin cancer, which is organized by dermatologists in 30 countries. The opportunity is given to the general public to have a free-of-charge screening of their moles by a dermatologist, one day each year.
In view of the increasing incidence of cutaneous melanoma in many European countries, particular emphasis has been given in public education campaigns and screening programs as a means of primary and secondary prevention.
The purpose of this screening event has been three-fold:
1) to provide a free screening to individuals,
2) to detect individuals with early-stage melanoma or skin cancer, or those with risk factors for these conditions, and
3) to inform the public through mass media campaign about the early signs of melanoma as well as the hazardous effects of sunlight on the skin.

Most babies born with a hearing loss are born into families with no history of hearing loss so it is important to screen all babies as early as possible. The hearing screen will usually be carried out while the baby is settled or sleeping at the mother's bedside. Any baby who does not have a clear response from the screen will be seen for a full audiological (hearing) assessment at the Audiology Clinic (hearing clinic) in Cork University Hospital.
